What is consumerism?
What is consumerism?
Consumerism means buying and using goods and services.
Consumers are people who buy things they need or want, such as food, clothes, electronics, and furniture. These items are called consumer goods.
How consumerism changed over time
In the past, people usually bought only what they needed. Today, people are often encouraged to buy more things, not only for need but also for comfort or enjoyment.
Materialism
Materialism is when people think that having many things or expensive items makes them happier or more successful. Sometimes people may value possessions more than other important things.
Advertising and consumerism
Advertising helps companies tell people about their products. Advertisements try to persuade people to buy things by showing why a product is good or popular. Sometimes advertising can make people want things they do not really need.
Children as consumers
Children are also consumers because they buy or choose products. It is important for children to learn how to make smart and responsible choices when buying things.
Why it is important to understand consumerism
- It helps people make better buying decisions.
- It teaches people to think about needs and wants.
- It helps people understand how advertising influences choices.
A good consumer thinks carefully before buying and chooses what is really needed.
