🧭 Why Do We Use Maps?
People have used maps for thousands of years to:
- Travel and find places
- Explore new lands
- Understand the world around them
Maps help us show many things like countries, land features, and distances.
⚠️ Are Maps Always Correct?
No map is perfectly correct.
- The Earth is round (a sphere)
- Maps are flat (2D)
- So, when we draw maps, some parts become stretched or distorted
These ways of drawing maps are called projections.
📜 Development of Maps
🏺 Early Maps
- The Ancient Babylonians made some of the first maps about 5000 years ago
- They drew maps on clay tablets
👨🔬 Ptolemy’s Maps
- Claudius Ptolemy used math and information from travelers
- He added a grid system (latitude and longitude)
- His maps were used for many centuries
🌍 Later Improvements
- Explorers helped improve maps by discovering new lands
- Juan de la Cosa made early maps of the Americas
-
Gerardus Mercator created the Mercator Projection
- Helps with navigation
- But makes some countries look bigger than they are
-
Arno Peters created the Peters Projection
- Shows countries in their true size
🗺️ Types of Maps
⛰️ Relief Maps

🧠 Key Idea
Maps are very useful, but:
👉 They are not perfect
