🛢️ What Oil Pollution is
Oil pollution happens when crude oil or petroleum spills enter marine and coastal ecosystems, usually because of human activities related to finding, moving, or using oil. Oil is toxic, thick, and sticky, so even small amounts can cause serious damage.
🔥 Causes of Oil Pollution
According to the Cambridge syllabus, the main causes are:
-
Off-shore oil extraction
- Oil wells and drilling platforms can leak during drilling or through accidents.
-
Pipelines
- Pipes carrying oil can corrode or crack, leaking oil into the sea or rivers.
-
Shipping (oil tankers)
- Accidents like collisions or grounding (hitting the sea floor) release oil into the water.
(You might also see smaller causes like cleaning oil tanks or operational spills.)
🌊 How Oil Pollution Affects the Environment
Oil pollution impacts many parts of the marine environment. Here are the key effects included in your syllabus:
🐦 1. Birds
- Oil sticks to feathers, breaking their waterproofing and insulation.
- Birds lose body heat, cannot fly well, and may die from cold or starvation.
- When birds try to clean themselves, they ingest toxic oil, which poisons them.
🦭 2. Marine Mammals
- Oil coats fur and skin, reducing insulation so animals like seals lose body heat.
- Oil can be toxic internally if inhaled or eaten with food.
🪸 3. Coral Reefs
- Oil slicks block sunlight, which corals need for their algae to photosynthesise (make food).
- The toxic oil chemicals can kill coral polyps, slowing reef growth.
🏖️ 4. Beaches and Coastal Areas
- Oil washes ashore and soaks into sand and rocks.
- This poisons animals living there (like crabs, worms, shellfish), damaging the food web.
- Cleanup is very difficult and oil can remain for years, slowly releasing toxins.
🧠 Why Oil Pollution is so Harmful
Oil pollution affects the environment in three main ways:
- Physical coating (smothering) — covers animals and plants, stopping normal functions.
- Toxicity (poisoning) — the chemicals in oil harm internal organs and cells.
- Blocking sunlight — prevents photosynthesis in plants and algae.
